Wamego

In the heart of northern Kansas, the town of Wamego has become a hotspot for fans of the The Wizard of Oz. Playing into the famous implication that “we’re not in Kansas anymore”, many movie-inspired businesses and attractions have cropped up in towns across the state, and Wamego is by far the best of them all. The OZ Museum, opened in 2004, features movie memorabilia, recreated scenes and a full-size theater. Across the street is the Yellow Brick Road, a colorful alleyway with art and Oz-related statues. The town is actually full of small replicas of Toto – Dorothy’s beloved dog in the movie – painted in a variety of different styles. Each fall, the town also puts on OZtoberFEST, a community celebration of all things Oz.
